LH Group Services is the UK’s largest independent re-manufacturer of power train products. Established in 1953 the Group covers over 28,000 square metres of workshop space near Burton on Trent and re-manufactures in excess of 6000 power train products each year. If we take for example the rafts of diesel transmission units - DMUs - which LH Group Services are contracted to overhaul then the Testo T176-T4 channel temperature data logger really comes into its own. The data logger offers 4 channel temperature monitoring with external sensor connections, a robust design for optimum impact protection, parallel temperature measurement capability at up to four sites and a single, one-button menu navigation and large memory.
A tangible example of the new system in action occurs when the rafts are carefully checked on state-of-the-art test beds and data can be downloaded for extra information via the Testo logger at the post test stage. The main ongoing advantage occurs after the unit has been returned to the customer and LH Group Services is able to monitor the state of important functions out in the field to give early warning of problems and to assist in continuing development of better and more efficient systems. Typically, cooling performance is checked by monitoring the temperatures of the coolant both in and out of the engine. It can then be seen if the cooling system is not working as it should be – due to debris in the radiator for example. The data can be checked and exchanged on an ongoing basis to identify situations such as excessive engine stress or damage before it develops in to a serious matter.
Electrical Supervisor Brian Minion takes up the theme “The neat slim design of the data logger means that it can easily tuck in to minimal space on the control panel and when on a raft we fit two loggers then this gives us the added input of monitoring other temperatures such as hydraulic oil, lubricating oil and the temperature of the turbocharged air as well as collecting more information which is invaluable for the health of the raft. We now fit a Testo logger to every class 22000 DMU which we overhaul, and we are looking in the future to install them on other systems which whilst adding a stage to the project does pay back in terms of the benefits of the information which we get back. The multiple benefits for all concerned translate in to a better quality and more accurate refurbishment for the customer plus maintaining a smooth continual dialogue. It only takes 10 seconds or so to download the data on to an SD card. I can’t think of anything else so easy and effective. This is definitely the way ahead”.
